Episode 32 | Keith Grounsell

Leadership Under Fire: A Conversation with Chief Keith Grounsell

What does leadership look like when doing the right thing comes with a real personal and professional cost?

On this episode of Two Chiefs, One Mic, we sit down with Chief Keith Grounsell, author of Leadership Under Fire, for a candid conversation about integrity, resilience, organizational culture, politics, and the realities of leading in law enforcement.

Keith brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience to the conversation. His career has included serving as a DEA Special Agent, police chief, and spending eight years working internationally with national police forces across dozens of countries.

But some of his most important leadership lessons came during one of the most difficult periods of his career.

Keith shares the story of refusing to compromise his integrity when faced with conduct he believed was wrong. That decision ultimately cost him his position and led to a 14-month battle before he was vindicated and reinstated as police chief.

Getting the job back, however, was only the beginning.

We talk about what it was like to return to a divided organization, rebuild trust, navigate political pressures, and create a culture where officers were empowered to succeed.

Throughout the conversation, Keith shares lessons that apply well beyond his experience: standing firm when your values are tested, understanding the difference between leadership and authority, giving your people room to succeed, and recognizing that doing the right thing isn't always the easiest path.

For current police chiefs, aspiring executives, supervisors, and anyone interested in leadership within law enforcement, Keith's story provides a valuable look at what it really means to lead when you're under fire.
